Cold Spring Meadow Park
Cold Spring Meadow Park, is located west
of Waynesboro along Antietam Creek at the site of a natural spring.
It was established in 1904 by the C.G. & W. Street Railway Co. as a
trolley park. A large open pavilion hosted concerts by the Wayne
Band. A few years later, the park was drained and enlarged to accommodate
baseball games.
In 1926 Robert W. Barnhart purchased
the six acre park and continued to host large gatherings such as family
reunions, company picnics and church socials. The pavilion
was converted into a roller skating rink, now thought to be the oldest
continuously operated indoor rink in the U.S. The miniature train
was purchased in 1944. The auto ride and the cast aluminum cars were
made by Barnhart, a skilled craftsman. A swimming pool was installed
about 1951 and later a game pavilion was built near the skating rink.
In 1971 Barnhart sold the park
to his son Merle who operated it for 13 years. Cold Spring Park was
closed in 1984 but the skating rink remained open until 1986. (These
facts were obtained from a conversation with Merle Barnhart in May 1993.
