Located on Route 16 in Rouzerville, PA, "The Big Dipper" was the main gathering place for the teenagers of Waynesboro and surrounding communities. The 1950's and the 1960's were the "heyday" years for the restaurant owned by Dick and Mary Jane Boyer. The couple did more than simply run a restaurant. They took an active role in the lives of the kids who frequented The Dipper, teaching by example their values of hard work, common courtesy, and compassion for others. The 50's and 60's would herald monumental changes to the fabric of American life. From social unrest to the threat of nuclear annihilation, the youth of America faced an uncertain future. To a whole generation of Waynesborians "The Big Dipper" is a happy memory from those times. It was a place where lifelong friendships were born over a burger and coke, and the sounds of Rock & Roll. The title of the painting, "The Place" was taken from a sign which hung by the front door of "The Big Dipper."
